One of the leading treatment methodologies for improving hand and upper limb function in recent years has been ‘Constraint Induced Movement Therapy’ (CI or CIMT). CI intensifies use of the ‘damaged’ limb by constraining the undamaged limb in a way that forces use of the affected limb.

It has been an effective therapy because it enforces repeated use of the involved upper extremity – sometimes for hours a day. This intensity of training is what leads to better brain control of the desired movement through plastic processes in the brain and central nervous system.

Unfortunately, CI therapy is limited to people who can already perform at a fairly high level of function with the affected limb or hand. This means that for the majority of people with very limited hand and arm mobility, effective options for significant rehabilitation have been few. At NeuroGym®’s Hand Centre, we now have the technology and experience to provide you with intensive therapy – even if your arm or hand function is extremely limited.
